GPA calculator: weighted and unweighted, side by side
Enter your letter grades and credit hours. You get the unweighted GPA colleges actually compare, and the weighted GPA your transcript uses to reward harder classes — plus the one-paragraph explanation of which matters when.
Add your courses — results update as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Which GPA matters for admissions?
The short answer: the unweighted one, in context. Admissions offices compare your 4.0-scale GPA against the typical admitted band for their school (you can see those bands on our school pages), and then evaluate rigor by reading your transcript against what your high school actually offered. A 3.7 with the hardest available schedule routinely beats a 4.0 that avoided it.
Weighted GPA is your school's internal reward system for hard classes — useful, but not comparable across schools (some weight +1.0 for AP, some +0.5 for honors, some don't weight at all). That's exactly why colleges standardize to the unweighted scale first.
